Creative talents shape Bahrain’s ‘Connecting Seas’ Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka
Osaka, Aug. 25 (BNA): In the Empowering Lives zone of Expo 2025 Osaka, the Kingdom of Bahrain Pavilion stands as a unique architectural landmark and cultural symbol, reflecting its theme Connecting Seas. Yet beyond its architectural presence, the Pavilion represents another kind of connection the meeting of Bahraini and international talents to create a truly integrated experience.
The journey begins with the striking exterior, designed by Lebanese architect Lina Ghotmeh and her practice Lina Ghotmeh Architecture. Inspired by the forms of traditional Bahraini vessels, the design reinterprets age-old boatbuilding techniques while incorporating Japanese woodworking craftsmanship. Spanning 995 square metres and rising 13.7 metres across four levels overlooking the sea, the Pavilion is built primarily from wood and relies on natural cooling systems, making it one of the most sustainable structures at the Expo.
Dana Abdulghani, Director of the Bahrain Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, said: "From the earliest stages of preparing for the Kingdom of Bahrain’s participation at Expo 2025 Osaka through to the Pavilion’s opening and welcoming of visitors, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities has ensured that this national participation is a space where cultural and creative diversity converge. The Pavilion has brought together talents from Bahrain and across the world, working in harmony to embody the concept of Connecting Seas. Through architecture, exhibitions, and the arts, the Pavilion offers an all-encompassing experience that proves culture’s power to build enduring bridges between nations."
The interior design-build is led by Bahraini firm Shepherd Studio, where visitors embark on a journey through the senses, bridging past and future.
Rashed Al Araifi of Shepherd Studio explained: "Our aim was to leave a distinctive mark on the Pavilion by building the experience around the five senses, allowing each exhibition to evoke a different feeling." He added that the Pavilion features diverse content across its four floors, including extraordinary sensory experiences. Among the highlights is a unique piece: The Two Seas special edition helmet, worn by McLaren driver Oscar Piastri at the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix 2025, designed in collaboration with the Pavilion and displayed as part of the experience.
The installations within the exhibitions were developed in coordination with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and a group of creatives. Artist and researcher Sissel Tolaas created Connecting Seas: A Scented Experience, engaging the sense of smell, while Bahraini artist and researcher Hassan Hujairi developed a sound installation inspired by the traditional art of Fjiri for Pearling Legacies: An Audio-Sensory Experience.
At the heart of the Pavilion, the café offers seasonal menus blending Bahraini flavours with Japanese ingredients, curated by multi-award-winning Bahraini chef Tala Bashmi. Adding another creative touch, the Pavilion staff and volunteers wear uniforms designed by Bahraini fashion designer Lulwa Al Ameen, featuring patterns inspired by Bahrain’s coastal and maritime environment.
The Pavilion’s visual identity was developed by Bahraini firm Quby Creative Consultants. Banan Al Yaquby, Founder and Creative Director of the firm, said: "We are truly proud to have been chosen to design the visual identity of the Bahrain Pavilion at Expo Osaka, and grateful to the Authority for giving us this opportunity." She added that the design was inspired by Bahrain’s cultural heritage, particularly traditional boatbuilding and postage stamps, serving as a reflection of communication and exchange between peoples: "This project is more than just design; it is a story of identity, crafted with pride by a team of Bahraini talents."
The Connecting Seas Pavilion, presented in collaboration with the Economic Development Board, is supported by Alba, Tamkeen, Mumtalakat, as well as the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, which supports events and programming. Several organisations have also enriched the Pavilion’s content by contributing artefacts and exhibits, including Alba, Bapco Energies, BFG International, Debaj, ASRY, GFH Financial Group, Racing Force Group, Danat, and Midal Cables.
Expo 2025 Osaka runs until October 13. The Kingdom of Bahrain will celebrate its Pavilion’s National Day at the Expo on September 18, with special events for international audiences.
