Strong earthquake strikes south of Argentina, Chilean navy warns of possible tsunami
Santiago, Aug. 22 (BNA): The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the earthquake which struck the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica does not pose a tsunami threat.
The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake, which occurred on Thursday, measured 7.5 on the Richter scale, revising down an earlier estimate of 8.0. It added that the epicentre was at a depth of 11 kilometres under the seabed.
The quake struck more than 700 kilometres southeast of Ushuaia, the southernmost city of Argentina, with a population of around 57,000.
The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy issued a warning of possible waves in its Antarctic territory, noting that the epicentre was located 258 kilometres northwest of Frei Base.
