Floods kill dozens, displace thousands in Niger
Niamey, Aug. 22 (BNA): The General Directorate of Civil Protection in Niger announced that floods since the beginning of the 2025 rainy season have killed 47 people and displaced more than 56,000, with damages reported in 78 out of the country’s 265 municipalities.
Authorities said relief teams have begun distributing food aid, mainly cereals, to those affected. Warnings were issued that the rainy season is expected to continue until October, raising concerns over further human and material losses.
Civil protection teams stressed the need to follow safety measures, including avoiding flood prone areas and fragile housing, not crossing water streams, and refraining from sheltering under trees.
Niger is among the countries most affected by climate change. Last year, it witnessed unprecedented floods that killed nearly 400 people, displaced more than 1.5 million, caused significant losses in agriculture and livestock, and led to the collapse of a historic mosque in the city of Zinder dating back over 200 years, prompting authorities to delay the school year by one month.
