South Korea suspends new DeepSeek downloads over privacy concerns
Seoul, Feb. 17 (BNA): The South Korean government said it has temporarily suspended the local service of the Chinese AI app DeepSeek over concerns about its data collection practices.
According to the South Korean News Agency (Yonhap), the Personal Information Protection Commission said that the service was suspended on Saturday evening and will be resumed after improvements and remedies are made in line with the country’s personal information protection laws.
The measure comes after several ministries and government entities in South Korea blocked internal access to the AI service amid concerns about the startup’s data management practices.
The commission had sent a formal inquiry to DeepSeek last month requesting clarification on its data collection and management methods. In response, the Chinese company appointed a representative in South Korea and acknowledged shortcomings in considering local protection laws while expressing its willingness to cooperate effectively with the commission.
